Unexpected Inspiration Backstory: Sol & Etri's Past

The crisp snow crunched under Etri's feet in a sickening way reminiscent of the rough gravel floor of the Sanctuary's acolyte quarter. His skin burned every time he sunk into a knee-high drift, the pain a constant reminder of the flames that waited for him should they be caught.

Unexpected Inspiration Series: Good Guys & Gratitude

This moodboard represents each of the important protagonists for a theme of "gratitude." When I first asked what they were all thankful for, each gave me non-tangible answers like "family," "career," "magic," and "things being better now." When I clarified that I needed things that could be portrayed in picture form, they all must have agreed to get sarcastic with me because this is what they came up with.

Unexpected Inspiration Character Backstory: Camille & Rosalie

Much like Etri and Sol, who never had a word for "brother" or "twin" until recently, Camille and Rosalie never knew what to call each other. The Sanctuaries of Shadow and Light, the temples in Montglace where all four grew up, forbid closeness and relationships of any kind.

Unexpected Inspiration Relationship: Adair & Feren

"What 'us'? There was never an us, it was always just you and what you wanted to turn me into. Maybe it's time to leave the past behind and stop fooling myself that I belong where I don't."

-Adair to Feren, a few months before Colorweaver (Book 1)

Unexpected Inspiration: The Future Trio & Bottled Spirits

It could simply be a bottle of cold coffee or tea, although the label wasn't a brand the three of them drank. It could, but it probably wasn’t. Ametrine had lived with Gilly long enough to assume something more sinister than a breakfast drink filled that bottle.

Unexpected Inspiration Connection: Dray & Sol

Sol needed to make Dray understand. It was a present to make them happy and now they were just about the opposite of happy. Or was sad the opposite of happy? Dray wasn't sad anymore, and that was what Sol had been going for, but angry wasn't what he wanted either. "But it was going to! It was going to be a surprise and now I told you and it's not a surprise anymore."

Unexpected Inspiration Connection: Blythe & Sol

"It's not different. She's a healer to broken people, I'm a healer to broken things. We both fix things. The difference is, she can't make broken people shoot spikes or ignite with the push of a button, and I can! I mean things, not people. I can't make people shoot spikes."

Unexpected Inspiration Connection: Adair & Dray

Adair maneuvered past the blades and wrapped his arms around Dray in a tight but careful hug. When Dray kissed his cheek, he knew he was forgiven.
