Unexpected Inspiration Main Characters - Art Commission

I just realized that I never shared this art of the five main characters that I commissioned like two years ago! This was drawn by Niiausen over on Instagram and it's perfect! It's so them from Adair painting his found family, to Dray picking on Blythe (in retaliation for my previous art where it was Blythe poking Dray, that's the art I use in my site banner), to Etri being the quiet support to his goofy twin Sol. There's a cute excerpt about their found family and how much they mean to each other that you can read here. I'll be sharing that full story sometime in the near future since it's almost done.

I love the little details in this art so much, like Addy's paintbrush glowing the color of his magic and his tattoo-like skin discoloration from the time he channeled Etri's magic, Dray's dragonscale sleeve tattoos, the embroidered moons on Etri's coat, and how Sol never wears shoes if he can avoid it. Then there's Blythe's constant exasperation about these four dorks being hers, of course!

As an aside, I've been working on some writing again. It's been a rough year without much that I've felt was good enough to share on this site, so that's why I've been so quiet here. But I'm doing kind of a mini-NaNoWriMo to try to get back into my creativity and it's possible I'll share some of the stories I've worked on over the past few months. I'm not sure if anyone still follows this site, but if they do, I promise I haven't forgotten about it.

I don’t think I ever shared these dolls/plushies that I made of my main characters, so here they are. Left to right in the top picture are Dray, Sol, Etri, Adair, and Blythe.

Unexpected Inspiration Character: Etri Celeste

Blythe's heart pounded against her rib cage at the sound of a voice where no one had been. At least she had an answer to her earlier question: his voice was nothing like his twin's. It was soft and almost lyrical- whatever his accent was, she couldn't place it, and had never heard anything like it.

Unexpected Inspiration Backstory: Sol & Etri's Past

The crisp snow crunched under Etri's feet in a sickening way reminiscent of the rough gravel floor of the Sanctuary's acolyte quarter. His skin burned every time he sunk into a knee-high drift, the pain a constant reminder of the flames that waited for him should they be caught.

Short Story: Roasted

Dray rose with every intention to shove past Etri and go out in the rain, regardless of their hatred of getting wet… until they caught the crinkles in the corner of Etri's eyes.

This would be a much better game than one involving a hippo.

Unexpected Inspiration Series: Good Guys & Gratitude

This moodboard represents each of the important protagonists for a theme of "gratitude." When I first asked what they were all thankful for, each gave me non-tangible answers like "family," "career," "magic," and "things being better now." When I clarified that I needed things that could be portrayed in picture form, they all must have agreed to get sarcastic with me because this is what they came up with.

Unexpected Inspiration Series: Etri's Shadow

Etri adjusted his coat, fingers ghosting over the dark fabric. “Believe me or not as you will. I only ask that the performers have more care or their lights will go dark.”

Blythe’s eyes fell on the fire at the mention of light. It seemed no longer as bright, like this strange conversation had lasted longer than a few minutes-- or as though Etri walking past had dimmed the flames.

Short Story: Poisonous

Blythe let out a little snort of a laugh. "Okay, unexpected I can believe. You can't possibly be saying that Adair is dangerous, though. He's about as dangerous as a kitten in a basket of yarn."
